As a teacher of the gifted, I come into at least tangential contact with policy considerations regarding exceptional education law. Students who are labeled gifted are, according to our handbook, guaranteed "gifted services" from the school system and from me, their teacher. They are required to sign a contract which both guarantees their services, but also obligates them to complete additional assignments above and beyond that of the peers. Traditionally, I use a broad statement that obligates the gifted students to answer weekly higher order thinking skills. These contracts are filed with the system and they receive extra state funds theoretically to be used to enhance educational opportunities for the gifted population.
Lastly, our policy book requires that I am both highly qualified in my field and that I maintain gifted certification.
